Have you ever felt a strange sensation after putting in your contact lenses? Discomfort or blurry vision might indicate that you’ve put them in the wrong way.
Don’t worry, this is a common mistake, especially for beginners. In this article, you'll find practical tips to always wear your lenses correctly.
Signs that your contact lenses are inside out
There are several signs that can tip you off that one (or both) of your lenses are inside out.
The first sign is if you feel discomfort or irritation after putting them on. Blurry vision can also be a good indicator that one of your contact lenses isn't the right way around. Lastly, if your lens moves more than usual or doesn’t stay in place, it’s likely inside out.
Methods to check if your lenses are inside out
If you think one of your contact lenses isn't facing the right way, don't panic. There are simple solutions to check this.
We recommend two techniques: the bowl method and the 1-2-3 markings.
-
The bowl method
This is undoubtedly the easiest method to quickly check if your lens is the right way around. Follow these steps:
-
Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap, then dry them with a clean, lint-free towel.
-
Take the lens out of its case with your index finger.
-
Disinfect it with an appropriate cleaning solution.
-
Place it on the tip of your finger so that it forms a bowl shape.
-
With your thumb and index finger, gently pinch the lens as if you were trying to fold it in half.
-
-
If the edges combine to form a perfect "U" (like a taco shell), it means the lens is the right way around.
-
If the edges run outwards, it’s a sign that the lens is inside out.

- The 1-2-3 markings
Suppliers like Johnson & Johnson understand that one of the most common challenges for lens wearers is putting the lens correctly.
For this reason, some models in the Acuvue range, such as Acuvue Oasys With Hydraclear Plus, 1Day Acuvue Moist, and Acuvue Vita, have been designed with interior markings, often numbered 1-2-3. These inscriptions help determine the orientation of the lens.
To see these inscriptions, follow these steps:
-
Thoroughly disinfect your hands and under your nails to remove any bacteria.
-
Take the lens out of its case.
-
Place it on your index finger and hold it up to a good light source.
-
-
If you read the numbers in the correct order, from left to right, it’s a sign that your lens is the right way around.
-
If the numbers appear reversed, it means your lens is inside out.
-
By adopting these techniques and following our advice, you can enjoy your contact lenses without discomfort. Always check the orientation before wearing them and maintain good hygiene.
